For all the advances in table-top and tablet computing, some design professionals will always prefer the feel of pen on paper to stylus on glass. A new device could provide them with the best of both the digital and the real worlds.

Cat's Paw Nebula

  • Jan. 21st, 2010 at 1:45 AM

Cat’s Paw Nebula or NGC 6334. This glowing nebula resembles a gigantic pawprint of a celestial cat out on an errand across the Universe. This complex region of gas and dust, where numerous massive stars are born, lies near the heart of the Milky Way galaxy, about 5500 light-years away. It covers an area on the sky slightly larger than the full Moon. The whole gas cloud is about 50 light-years across.

Audi E-Tron Detroit Concept

  • Jan. 11th, 2010 at 9:05 PM

The lithium-ion batteries—which weigh 880 pounds—are located just in front of the rear axle, and the car is said to weigh a total of 2976 pounds, or roughly 200 more than the similarly sized Tesla Roadster. Audi claims a 40/60 weight distribution and a 0-to-62-mph time of 5.9 seconds. Top speed is limited to 124 mph. By comparison, the Tesla is much quicker; we’ve clocked the Sport version to 60 mph in four seconds flat, although its top speed is 122 mph. The Detroit e-tron is said to have a cruising range of 155 miles on a full charge, which takes 11 hours with a 230-volt current or just two hours if you can manage to find a special 400-volt charging station.

Dissecting the Crab Nebula

  • Dec. 3rd, 2009 at 2:48 PM

In the year 1054 A.D., 12 years before the Battle of Hastings and the Norman conquest of England, a very bright explosion in the constellation of Taurus lit up the skies. In the Dark Ages, this was probably seen as an omen or some kind of supernatural occurrence, but astronomers were in fact treated to a very rare event: a supernova in our cosmic neighborhood, only 6,000 light-years away.
